An academic baseline is a starting point for comparison—not a label attached to a student.
After roughly a month, a family may have enough evidence to describe how the student accesses school, manages work, responds to early instruction, explains what they know, and carries the total load. The picture will still be incomplete. That incompleteness belongs in the record.
Define the decision before collecting data
Ask what the baseline should help decide:
- Is the current course placement accessible and appropriately challenging?
- Is the work system reliable?
- Is an early low grade a skill, instruction, submission, or access issue?
- Does the student need a routine change, teacher help, formal support, or further evaluation?
- What evidence should be compared at the next review?
Do not collect every portal number because it exists. Collect evidence that changes a next step.
Use six evidence lanes
1. Access and attendance
Record whether the student can:
- attend the correct classes;
- access course pages, texts, devices, and materials;
- receive formal services/accommodations;
- use transportation and arrive ready;
- see accurate attendance records.
No conclusion about learning is valid when the student did not have a fair opportunity to access the instruction or task.
2. Assignment execution
Sample a normal week:

This separates knowledge from workflow. A zero for an unsubmitted file does not measure the same thing as an incorrect explanation on submitted work.
3. Authentic work sample
Choose one or two representative items per priority course:
- prompt/directions;
- student's original work;
- rubric, answer evidence, or teacher feedback;
- any correction/revision;
- conditions: independent, group, timed, open-note, supported.
Do not select only the best or worst result. Pick work that represents the current task.
4. Feedback and skill
Translate feedback into observable statements:
- “solves one-step equations accurately but loses signs in multi-step work”;
- “identifies a claim but does not yet connect quoted evidence to reasoning”;
- “recalls vocabulary in recognition tasks, not yet in independent writing.”
Avoid “bad at math,” “careless,” or “not a reader.” Those labels do not specify what to teach or practice.
5. Student explanation and help-seeking
Ask the student to explain:
What was the task testing?
Show one part you can do.
Where did the process become uncertain?
What feedback did you receive?
What would you try next?
Who can help in this course?
An explanation gives information a score cannot. It can reveal a misunderstood direction, a partial strategy, or a confident skill hidden by a submission problem.
6. Sustainable load
Map classes, homework, commute, activities, work/caregiving, meals, sleep opportunity, and recovery. A student completing work at 1 a.m. may look “successful” in the portal while the schedule is failing.
Use the balanced study-week method to see whether the workload fits a real week.
Understand assessment roles
Different evidence answers different questions:
- classroom/formative evidence helps teacher and student adjust current learning;
- interim assessment may provide a periodic snapshot and growth comparison under that system;
- summative assessment measures a larger body of work at a later point;
- grade/report summarizes performance under local grading rules;
- work sample reveals the task, process, and feedback directly.
If the school uses MAP Growth, NWEA describes the first result as an initial baseline, not a report card or complete story. NWEA is also the assessment provider, so ask the school how it uses the result and whether accommodations and testing conditions were appropriate.
Do not compare scores from unrelated assessments as if they share a scale.
Use accurate uncertainty labels
For each priority skill or workflow, choose:

“Below grade level” is not a casual label for a family to assign from one worksheet. Ask what standard, measure, comparison group, time, and context support any formal claim.

Attach or link only the few relevant work samples. The baseline should be usable, not an archive.
Choose one next-step experiment
Examples:
Submission problem
For two weeks, the student checks the receipt/status after submitting priority work and records any mismatch. The goal is reliable delivery, not more content practice.
Unclear directions
Before starting, the student paraphrases the task and checks one example. They ask the teacher one specific question when the expected output remains unclear.
Defined skill gap
Use teacher-provided practice or a short targeted practice set with feedback, then compare a similar task. Do not repeat pages of unrelated work.
Course load problem
Estimate actual weekly hours for two weeks, protect sleep and fixed responsibilities, then discuss level or schedule options before the local change deadline.
Access problem
Route the missing material, account, accommodation, or service to its owner now. Do not measure student independence in a blocked system.
Avoid baseline mistakes
- Averaging unrelated test scores.
- Treating an early portal grade with empty categories as final.
- Retesting a student until the family gets the expected answer.
- Comparing siblings or classmates without equivalent tasks/conditions.
- Counting parent-completed work as independent evidence.
- Buying tutoring before identifying the tutoring job.
- Turning attendance/coursework research into a homemade risk score.
- Ignoring student strengths, interests, language, disability/access context, or opportunity to learn.
Decide who needs the evidence
The student should see and help interpret the baseline. Share a concise version with the teacher, counselor, tutor, or school team only when it supports a real question and through an appropriate channel.
Message example:
We reviewed three Algebra assignments. Sam can solve the demonstrated examples but loses the process when the problem format changes; the submission record is complete. Could you suggest one current course skill or resource to practice before the next unit check, and how Sam should access help time?
Use the parent–school communication plan for routing and documentation.
Review after comparable evidence exists
At the next date, ask:
- Did the specific friction change?
- Is the new evidence comparable in task and conditions?
- What did the student learn about the process?
- Did support occur as planned?
- What remains unknown?
- Keep, modify, stop, or escalate the experiment?
The baseline is successful when it makes the next question smaller and more accurate. It should never make the student feel that the first month has already decided the year.

Frequently asked questions
What is an academic baseline?
It is a documented starting point for later comparison. For a family, it can summarize what the student can access and do now, the evidence available, the conditions, and what has not yet been taught or observed.
Should parents give a diagnostic test at home?
Usually not as a default. Start with school-provided assessments, authentic classwork, teacher feedback, and student explanation. A commercial or homemade test may not align with the course and can be misinterpreted.
Is one month enough to know how a student will do?
No. One month can reveal access, routine, early work, and questions worth testing, but it cannot predict the year. Some content has not been taught, grading categories may be incomplete, and adjustment takes time.
