A 35-minute school commute can be easy: one reliable train, a short walk and time to read.

It can also mean leaving home 55 minutes early because one missed bus creates a late arrival, then losing access to after-school help because there is no return route.

Distance is a poor proxy. Test the complete day.

There is no national “too far” number

Urban Institute research in five choice-rich US cities found meaningful differences in travel by age, city, mode and student group. Public transit often took substantially longer than driving, and car access expanded the schools a family could reach. A separate NYC analysis found a wide distribution among ninth-grade choices, including very long trips.

Those studies describe systems and choices. They do not establish that 30, 45 or 60 minutes is acceptable for your student.

The decision depends on:

  • reliability rather than ideal travel time;
  • walking, waiting and transfers;
  • departure and arrival conditions;
  • independence and accessibility;
  • after-school routes;
  • adult work/care labor;
  • sleep, meals, homework and recovery;
  • what verified benefit the farther school provides.

Define the four routes you actually need

1. Normal morning

From front door to the place the student must report—not to the parking lot.

Include:

  • getting to the stop or vehicle;
  • expected wait;
  • transfers;
  • parking/drop-off queue;
  • security/entry;
  • walk to first location;
  • a reasonable early-arrival buffer.

2. Normal dismissal

From final bell through hallway, locker, pickup queue or stop to home. A bus scheduled three minutes after dismissal may not be usable from the far side of campus.

3. Late help or activity

Test the actual ending time for tutoring, counseling, rehearsal, practice, club or detention. Ask whether a late bus exists, which days/routes it runs and what happens when an event ends later.

Use the extracurricular access checklist; activities that cannot be reached or left safely are not real options.

4. Disruption day

Model rain/snow/heat where relevant, a canceled run, missed transfer, caregiver delay, dead phone, road congestion or early dismissal. Identify a backup that can be used without improvising with a stranger.

Run route trials, not map estimates

Travel on a representative school day at the times the student will travel. Do not test only Sunday afternoon.

Repeat at least twice if reliability is a decision factor. For driving, include the adult's round trip and the empty return—not only the student's ride.

Verify transportation eligibility

School-bus, transit-pass, mileage, hazard, disability-related and choice-program transportation rules vary by state, district, grade, distance, placement and program.

Ask the controlling authority:

  • Is transportation provided for this exact school and program?
  • Is eligibility based on home-to-school distance or another rule?
  • Must the family opt in, and by when?
  • Is a stop guaranteed or assigned later?
  • Is transportation available after school?
  • What changes if the student accepts a choice, magnet, charter or transfer placement?
  • How are accessibility/individualized needs determined?
  • What is the appeal or contact process?

Get a current written answer. An admissions offer does not automatically include the route a family assumed.

Add transport dates and dependencies to the high-school application timeline.

Calculate total weekly time

Use median real trial time plus a realistic buffer, not the fastest app result.

Then compare with the closer option. A 25-minute difference each way equals more than four hours in a five-day week. The opportunity cost might be sleep, family meals, paid work, practice, homework, exercise or unstructured recovery.

Time is not automatically wasted; a direct train may allow reading or rest. Count usable time honestly and do not plan on demanding homework in an unsafe, crowded or motion-sickness-inducing trip.

Protect sleep opportunity

CDC guidance says adolescents ages 13–18 generally need 8–10 hours of sleep; its high-school surveillance uses less than eight hours as insufficient. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends middle and high schools aim for starts no earlier than 8:30 a.m. and explicitly notes commuting in schedule decisions.

This does not prove that each extra commute minute causes a particular outcome. It does mean the family should build a clock that permits sleep.

If the plan requires a teen to fall asleep at an unrealistic time every school night, the commute is not sustainable on paper.

Price the complete trip

Calculate monthly and annual:

  • fares or passes not covered;
  • fuel, tolls, parking and maintenance;
  • rideshare/taxi emergency use;
  • after-school pickup miles;
  • adult work hours or schedule changes;
  • sibling/care coverage;
  • required phone/data;
  • seasonal clothing or equipment for walking/cycling.

Avoid valuing adult time at zero. “Parent can drive” is a recurring operational commitment, not a free resource.

Compare a verified benefit, not prestige

Write the exact advantage gained by traveling farther:

  • a course sequence the closer school cannot provide;
  • a required service or program fit;
  • a substantially stronger, evidenced support process;
  • a safer or more connected environment for this student;
  • an activity/pathway the student can actually enter;
  • an admissions route aligned to a specific need.

Then challenge it:

  • Is it current and accessible to this student?
  • Does it run reliably?
  • Could a closer option provide the important parts?
  • Does the commute prevent the student from using it?
  • Would the school still be acceptable if the flagship feature changes?

A higher composite rating is not enough. Read its inputs and translate them into a student-level benefit.

Use a commute scorecard

Do not allow “benefit gained” to cancel a failing safety or essential-access gate. In the broader high-school comparison scorecard, commute belongs as both feasibility and quality-of-week evidence.

Ask the student, then test behavior

Ask:

  • Which parts of the route feel manageable or draining?
  • Would you still attend help or an activity after this trip?
  • Which weekly responsibility would lose time?
  • Can you navigate a missed stop/connection?
  • What would make you ask for backup?
  • Is the school benefit worth this route on a cold, wet or difficult Tuesday?

Enthusiasm during admissions is useful but can discount repetition. If possible, simulate a full week of earlier wake times and comparable travel during the decision period.

A commute is worth it when the family can name the benefit, the student can access it, the week still works and the route survives ordinary failures. If one of those conditions breaks, revisiting the decision is responsible—not a failure of commitment.
