A useful school goal tells you what to do next and how you will know whether the action helped. “Get better grades” describes a hoped-for result. “After each science lesson, answer one question without notes and check it on Friday” creates evidence you can use.
Set one goal first. A list of ten goals usually becomes another task to avoid.
Choose the goal that deserves your attention
Do not automatically choose the subject with the lowest mark. Choose a problem that is:
- important enough to affect current work;
- narrow enough to act on;
- partly within your control;
- supported by evidence rather than a label;
- suitable for review within the next few weeks.
Use this quick comparison:

One carefully chosen learning problem is not a verdict on your overall ability.
Use the baseline–action–evidence–review card

EEF guidance describes metacognition as a cycle of planning, monitoring and evaluating learning. That does not mean constantly judging yourself. It means treating a plan as something you can test and improve.
Add a fifth line when the goal depends on someone else:

This stops “be independent” from meaning “never ask for help”.
Start with a problem you can observe
Replace a label with a situation:
- “I am bad at English” becomes “I can find a quotation, but my paragraph does not explain how it supports the argument.”
- “I am disorganised” becomes “Tasks arrive in three places and I do not copy all of them into one list.”
- “I need to revise more” becomes “I reread notes but cannot answer a question without them two days later.”
The narrower description reveals a next action. It also prevents one result from becoming a judgement about your ability.
Use a three-source baseline
Where possible, compare:
- Your work: a recent answer, task record or revision attempt.
- Feedback: the exact comment, mark-scheme point or teacher explanation.
- Your account: where you felt the task first became uncertain.
These sources can disagree. You may feel you do not know the topic but repeatedly lose marks through misreading the command word. Or you may receive “add detail” when the deeper issue is that the relevant knowledge was not retrieved. Treat the disagreement as a question to investigate.
Choose an action close to the problem
Good actions produce the evidence you need. If the problem is recalling key ideas, the action should include an unaided attempt and a check. If it is missing tasks, it should change the capture process. If it is essay structure, it should include planning and feedback on a fresh answer.
Avoid actions that are only time totals. “Study for ten hours” does not tell you what was learned. A session should name an outcome such as “complete and mark six ratio questions, then record the cause of each error”. The balanced study week guide shows how to fit outcomes around real commitments.
Build the action at the right level
An action can fail because it is too broad, too small or aimed at the wrong cause.

The action should create evidence about the problem, not merely look like studying.
Make the evidence fair
Use evidence that is comparable to the baseline:
- a fresh question testing the same skill;
- two weeks of task-capture records;
- a second essay plan using the same success criterion;
- the amount and type of help needed before and after practice;
- teacher feedback on the specific skill.
A grade may be relevant later, but it combines many topics and conditions. Do not make one test the only verdict on a small habit.
Record the conditions as well as the result: fresh or repeated task, notes open or closed, timed or untimed, and amount of help. “Correct with three prompts” and “correct independently on a fresh question” are different evidence.
Review the goal without moving it unfairly
At the review date, choose one outcome:
- Keep it: the action is happening and the evidence is moving in the intended direction.
- Adjust it: the action is too large, happens at the wrong time or produces weak evidence.
- Change the support: you need an explanation, school input or a different resource before practice can work.
- Retire it: the skill is sufficiently secure or a more important goal has emerged.
Do not rewrite the target after seeing the result merely to declare success or failure. Record what the original evidence showed.
Diagnose a goal that did not work
Ask in this order:
- Did the action happen? If not, change its cue, size or place in the week.
- Was it completed as intended? Rereading is not an unaided retrieval attempt.
- Did it test the right cause? The original explanation of the problem may have been wrong.
- Was the evidence comparable? A much harder task cannot show the effect of one small habit fairly.
- Is more teaching or support needed? Practice cannot repair knowledge that was never understood.
A failed plan can still produce a useful finding. It does not automatically mean the learner failed.
Three ready-to-adapt examples
Starting homework
Baseline: I delay because “do history” feels too large.
Action: write the first physical step and work on it for five minutes.
Evidence: starting time and what existed after five minutes.
Review: after five school days.
Maths accuracy
Baseline: I lose marks after correct early steps.
Action: underline the requested form, show intermediate values and do a final reasonableness check.
Evidence: error types on two comparable six-question sets.
Review: after the second set.
Asking for help
Baseline: I say “I don't get it” after staring at the whole task.
Action: write what the question asks, what I tried and the exact step that failed.
Evidence: a precise question I can bring to a teacher or tutor.
Review: after three uses.

If the school year has not started, pair one goal with the seven-day reset plan. Once classes begin, let the first week's work change your assumptions rather than adding more goals immediately.
