Spaced practice means returning to learning across more than one session instead of concentrating every encounter in a single block. A useful schedule is not a magic sequence of fixed intervals. It uses the quality of each new attempt to decide what should return and when.
Start with four encounters, then adapt.
Separate spacing from simply delaying
Spacing works as a learning plan only when each return asks the learner to retrieve, explain or apply something. Waiting a week and rereading the same page is delayed exposure, not a useful check of what survived.
Before scheduling, define:
- the knowledge or skill being revisited;
- the output required before looking at support;
- the source used to check;
- how the next task will differ;
- what evidence moves the next return closer or further away.
A four-encounter schedule

You might place the first two encounters close together and later ones further apart, but performance controls the next decision. There is no single interval that fits every learner, topic and assessment.
A starting pattern, not a formula
For a topic first learned on Monday, an initial plan might include a short return later that week, another the following week and a later mixed check. Those dates are placeholders. A blank early attempt needs teaching and a sooner retry; independent success on varied questions can justify a longer gap.
Do not advertise a fixed “day 1, day 3, day 7” sequence as universally optimal. Course demands, prior knowledge, task difficulty and the quality of each attempt differ.
Decide the next gap from evidence
After each attempt, record:
- accuracy and completeness;
- whether you could explain the answer;
- how much help or prompting you used;
- whether the question was genuinely fresh;
- the type of error that remained.
Then choose:

This is a planning rule, not a claim that one attempt proves permanent mastery.
Record support explicitly:
0— independent;1— general prompt;2— specific cue or partial structure;3— worked model or answer available.
A correct response at level 3 is useful guided practice, but the next encounter should remove some support before the topic is scheduled further away.
Space the practice, not passive exposure
Four sessions of rereading can still hide what you cannot produce. Each return needs an output before checking. The active-recall protocol works for facts and explanations; practice questions, essay plans and annotated examples may be better for applied skills.
For example, a maths sequence might be:
- study and complete one worked example with explanation;
- solve three fresh same-method questions without the model;
- solve a mixed set where you must choose the method;
- use the method in an exam-style section and review the mark scheme.
An English sequence might be:
- learn what a criterion requires and inspect an annotated example;
- plan one response without notes;
- write a paragraph, receive or apply feedback;
- plan or write a fresh response using the same target.
A science example with changing context
- Encounter 1: learn the particle explanation for a state change; draw and explain it.
- Encounter 2: retrieve the explanation from a blank diagram.
- Encounter 3: choose which explanation applies to an unfamiliar observation and justify it.
- Encounter 4: answer an exam-style question, check the terminology and repair omissions.
The core idea stays stable while the required selection and application become less familiar.
Put returns into the week
Label each task with the encounter, not just the topic:
Biology — respiration E2: blank diagram + check;Maths — ratio E3: mixed six-question set;Literature — theme E4: five-minute plan, no quote list.
This prevents every session from restarting at “look over the notes”. Use the balanced study week to place first encounters, returns and a buffer around real commitments.
Build a schedule from the assessment backwards
Do not save the first realistic task attempt for the final days. Work backwards:
- reserve a later point for a mixed or more authentic performance;
- place time before it for repairing what that performance reveals;
- schedule earlier retrieval and application attempts;
- identify the latest point at which teacher feedback or clarification is still usable;
- keep capacity for topics that prove weaker than expected.
This is not a countdown that fills every day. It ensures evidence can still change the plan.
Review and retire prompts deliberately
At the end of the week:
- bring repeated errors into next week's protected priorities;
- move secure items to a longer maintenance gap;
- rewrite prompts that were vague or too easy;
- ask for an explanation where solo repair failed;
- check that your set samples the actual specification or course goals.
AQA's revision guidance says that shorter sessions spread over time can support learning, but your board and teacher remain the source for what the course requires. The six-step revision system connects spacing to planning, accurate checking and repair.
Troubleshoot a schedule that keeps growing

Keep the explanation in the final column. A calendar date without the reason becomes a queue rather than a learning decision.
