A low maths mark is evidence from one assessment, not a complete description of your ability. Rebuild confidence by making the result specific, selecting one controllable cause, repairing it and producing a fresh independent proof.

Separate the event from the story

Write two lines:

Event: “I scored ___ on ___ topics under ___ conditions.”
Story I am telling: “This means ___.”

The event can be checked. The story may contain a conclusion such as “I cannot do maths” that is much broader than the paper supports.

Debrief the paper when it is available

Sort questions into four groups:

  • secure and explainable;
  • correct but dependent on help, memory of the identical item or luck;
  • partly correct with a visible missing step;
  • wrong/blank and needing a cause investigation.

Then use the GCSE Maths gap matrix to distinguish knowledge, method, reading, accuracy, communication and time. One low total may come from several small, different causes.

Choose the smallest useful proof

Avoid a response such as “complete three full papers this weekend”. Choose one pattern:

“On two questions I selected the right method but changed signs during elimination. I will annotate one worked example, solve three fresh questions while showing each sign change, check them, then solve one mixed question two days later.”

The proof is not feeling positive. It is being able to perform the relevant step more accurately or independently on fresh work.

Use a repair ladder

  1. Explain: identify the exact missing idea or point of failure.
  2. Model: inspect one correct worked process and annotate why each step happens.
  3. Guide: complete an example with limited prompts.
  4. Remove: solve a comparable question without the model.
  5. Transfer: solve a differently presented or mixed question later.

Record the help used. Correct with support is progress and tells you what to remove next.

Ask for specific feedback

Bring the paper or a worked attempt to a teacher or tutor and ask:

  • “Which prerequisite should I repair first?”
  • “Is the selected method valid, and where does it stop being valid?”
  • “What would count as a fresh comparable question?”
  • “Which part of my working prevents marks from being awarded?”

Ofqual's explanation of official marking in England shows that marking is a defined professional process. Your school can explain how this particular internal or official-style assessment was marked.

Build an evidence log

After several entries, look for increasing independence and fewer repeated causes. Do not demand a dramatic score change from one tiny repair.

Separate the event from the explanation

  1. Event: what assessment or task happened, under what conditions?
  2. Evidence: what was secure and where did the first repeated problems appear?
  3. Explanation to test: knowledge, method, interpretation, accuracy, timing, access or preparation?

“I got 38%, so I am bad at maths” jumps from one event to a fixed identity. “I solved routine substitution questions but lost signs in unfamiliar contexts” creates a testable next step.

Do not begin with another full paper if the learner cannot yet explain the failed step. Equally, do not remain on easy repeated examples once the method is secure.

Worked example

After a low mock mark, Priya notices:

  • most number questions were attempted;
  • algebra questions often begin correctly;
  • negative substitution causes repeated sign errors;
  • two later questions were never reached.

The first plan separates two issues:

  1. repair and independently retry negative substitution;
  2. later examine paper navigation and timing after the method is stable.

Priya saves a fresh successful attempt as the next proof. It does not erase the mock or guarantee a future grade, but it contradicts the claim that nothing can change.

Talk about the result without false reassurance

Useful response:

This result matters, but it is a sample. Let's inspect the working, choose one cause we can test and collect a fresh attempt before making a bigger judgement.

Avoid:

  • “It doesn't matter at all”;
  • “You just need more confidence”;
  • “Do another whole paper tonight”;
  • guaranteed grade predictions;
  • comparing the learner with siblings or classmates.

Know when confidence is not the only issue

Ask school or an appropriate professional for support when there is persistent distress, repeated access difficulty, suspected unmet learning needs, bullying, attendance problems or a sudden broad change in functioning. A study technique should not be used to diagnose or contain a serious concern.
