Tutoring builds learner independence when the learner can make more of the relevant decisions without the tutor. Correct answers produced through continuous hints may look successful while leaving the original dependency intact. Track support as carefully as accuracy.

Define the independent performance

Name what the learner should eventually do alone and under what conditions:

  • choose and apply the method on a fresh GCSE maths question;
  • plan an English response from a new extract without a sentence frame;
  • retrieve and connect two causes without notes;
  • begin a homework task using an agreed stuck routine before asking for help.

“Be more confident” can accompany the goal, but it is not a substitute for observable performance.

Use a least-help-first ladder

When the learner gets stuck, pause before rescuing. Move only as far down the ladder as needed:

  1. Wait: allow thinking time.
  2. Orient: “What is the question asking you to produce?”
  3. Retrieve: “What relevant rule, example or criterion can you recall?”
  4. Compare: offer two possibilities or a worked example to analyse.
  5. Cue: point to the specific representation or step.
  6. Model one decision: explain why you choose it.
  7. Return the work: learner completes the next step and explains it.

Do not turn the ladder into a ritual. If essential knowledge is absent, teach it clearly. The purpose is to avoid supplying more help than the evidence requires.

Plan the fade when you add a scaffold

Every prompt should have an exit route:

The UCL account of scaffolding stresses support that is contingent on learner need and withdrawn as competence grows. The DfE evidence review also discusses movement from guided towards independent practice. Apply both with subject-specific judgement.

Run the prompt–fade–check loop

  1. Let the learner attempt before intervening.
  2. Record the smallest prompt that unlocks progress.
  3. Ask the learner to explain the decision, not repeat your words.
  4. Reduce or remove that prompt on a comparable task.
  5. Check again after spacing, not only immediately.
  6. If independence does not hold, revise the explanation or prerequisite hypothesis.

Avoid helping during the “independent” check. If you do help, record the level honestly and schedule another check.

Track dependence explicitly

Use a compact scale for one defined task:

  • A — modelled: tutor performs the key decision;
  • B — strongly prompted: learner acts after a specific cue;
  • C — lightly prompted: learner acts after a general orienting question;
  • D — independent: learner selects and executes on a fresh task;
  • E — retained/transferred: learner repeats after a gap or in school work.

This is a planning tool, not a standardised assessment. Record the task and conditions so movement is interpretable.

Use the first tutoring lesson structure to capture a starting point, the learning-gap workflow when support is not fading, and the learner-facing stuck-on-homework decision ladder to transfer help-seeking beyond tutoring.

Identify tutor-created dependence

Watch for:

  • tutor speaks immediately after every pause;
  • questions contain the next step;
  • the same scaffold remains visible indefinitely;
  • learner waits for approval after each line;
  • session success disappears in school work;
  • practice uses only near-identical examples;
  • the tutor corrects before the learner checks.

These patterns can coexist with high in-session accuracy.

Work through a fade

Task: plan an English analytical paragraph.

Starting support: full frame with claim, evidence, method, effect and question link.

Fade sequence:

  1. remove the example content but keep section labels;
  2. replace labels with three general questions;
  3. ask the learner to write their own self-prompt;
  4. use a fresh extract with only the task visible;
  5. return later and compare whether the learner initiates the same decisions.

At each stage, record the smallest prompt needed. If quality collapses, restore only enough support to diagnose the missing decision.

Teach self-help routines

Transfer tutor questions to the learner:

The goal is not silent solo work. Independent learners know when and how to seek proportionate help.

Coordinate independence outside the session

Agree a task that:

  • is short enough to complete without live tutoring;
  • uses the same decision in a fresh context;
  • states what help is permitted;
  • asks the learner to record support honestly;
  • returns as evidence, not a compliance score.

Parents should avoid reintroducing the full scaffold at home. Give them the same least-help-first boundary where appropriate.

Review whether tutoring can reduce

Ask:

  • Is the learner starting the task independently?
  • Are self-prompts replacing tutor prompts?
  • Does learning appear after a gap?
  • Can the learner identify when school help is needed?
  • Is the original goal met?
  • Could frequency, duration or scope now reduce?

Continuing unchanged after independence is achieved can recreate dependence.
