Plan a first tutoring lesson around four jobs: establish a safe working fit, gather a bounded baseline, teach one worthwhile point and check what the learner can then do with less help. The lesson should produce evidence and momentum—not a diagnosis of everything or a promise about grades.
Prepare from the actual learning context
Before the lesson, ask for only what you need:
- subject, school stage and current topic;
- awarding organisation, specification and tier where relevant;
- the learner's own recent attempt, with feedback if available;
- the learner's view of what is difficult;
- the parent's or referrer's goal and practical constraints;
- relevant access needs and agreed communication/safeguarding arrangements.
Read the work for hypotheses, not conclusions. A blank answer might reflect missing knowledge, misunderstanding, overload, low confidence or a practical barrier. The learner's attempt in the session should help you separate them.
Use a four-part flexible agenda

Do not force identical timings. A Year 7 reading task, a GCSE algebra misconception and an A-level essay plan require different proportions.
Choose one teachable priority
Select the earliest gap that materially blocks the current task and is small enough to teach and check. State it precisely:
- weak: “needs help with maths”;
- better: “can substitute positive values but loses the sign when substituting a negative value”;
- weak: “English structure”;
- better: “selects evidence but does not explain how the writer's choice supports the inference”.
This keeps teaching aligned with the learner's course while avoiding a lesson that races across unrelated weaknesses.
Move from more support to less
Use the least help that unlocks the next attempt:
- wait and ask the learner to reread or restate the task;
- ask a retrieval or comparison question;
- point to a relevant representation, example or success criterion;
- model one step while explaining the decision;
- return a similar step to the learner;
- use a fresh independent check.
The DfE evidence review discusses individualised instruction and gradual movement towards independent practice. Treat that as a design principle, not a script that overrides subject judgement.
Close with evidence, not impressions
Record four lines:
- Starting evidence: what the learner initially did.
- Teaching response: what explanation or prompt changed the attempt.
- Independent evidence: what the learner then did without that support.
- Next action: one task and when it will be reviewed.
Share only proportionate, agreed information. Avoid labels such as “lazy”, “low ability” or “definitely on track for a 7”. One lesson does not support those claims.

Prepare two routes, not one script
Plan:
- Route A: the learner can attempt the expected prerequisite, so teaching moves to the stated task.
- Route B: the prerequisite is missing or fragile, so the lesson narrows and the tutor explains the changed scope.
Do not prepare twenty disconnected activities to appear flexible. Prepare a bounded task, a prerequisite check, one teaching representation and a fresh transfer item.
Work through a first-lesson example
Brief: Year 11 learner “does not understand simultaneous equations”.
Baseline task: one substitution and one elimination question, with think-aloud.
Evidence: substitution is executed correctly when named; elimination stalls because the learner does not see why equations may be multiplied.
Teaching decision: compare two equations visually and model the purpose of creating matching coefficients, then ask the learner to explain that decision.
Guided attempt: learner chooses a multiplier with one general prompt.
Fresh check: learner chooses and uses the method on a new pair without the model.
Close: record that method selection—not all algebra—is the current target; schedule a mixed return and ask school/tutor materials to confirm course alignment.
This is more useful than administering a long generic test and teaching nothing.
Script the moments that protect learner thinking
- “Talk me through what you notice before I help.”
- “Which part is certain, and where does uncertainty begin?”
- “What is the smallest hint that would let you continue?”
- “Explain why that step works.”
- “Now try this related item without the prompt.”
- “What will you do if you meet this alone?”
Questions are not automatically good because they are open. Each should expose or advance a relevant decision.
Close with a provisional plan
State:
Today we observed __ under __ conditions. The explanation/prompt that helped was __. On a fresh task, the learner could __ independently and still needed __. Next session will check __ before extending to __.
Avoid diagnosing ability, SEND/ALN, motivation or long-term outcome from one meeting.
